California Poppy, Plant Meditation Club, 1/12/26

This week we meditated with California Poppy.

Initial Experience

We had some varying impressions on the smell: hay, fishy hay, and sunshine. The taste seemed to be similar to green tea, although without the astringent property. This varied quite a bit based on how much herb was used and the steep time. Faint impressions of (groovy!) moss, butter, oil, and slight bitterness in the background.

The tea felt warming. A couple people felt a little stuffed up after drinking it, suggesting it may help with congestion.

Meditation

-I feel warm and quiet. The plant helps clear away some confusion around stressful thoughts. Now, my mind is calm, comfortably clear—not like meditation, like sinking into sleep. I hear this is the “Just here to sleep” feeling. I think of spooning too. Being the little spoon.

-I feel peaceful, not sleep at all—balanced. It felt good for my body at the end of a long day, restorative.

I thought of the song “Up and Away” by fifth dimension.

-I felt tingling in my teeth.

-My two front teeth hurt.

-This was not as I expected. The tea was really hydrating. I feel energized. I was not restless, but alert. I was aware of my heart—there was pressure in the center of my chest, my sternum.

-I feel sternal pressure. I feel hydrated and calm. I know this herb—it is used for enuresis. It says “When I help with peeing at night, it’s just ‘I know how to sleep now.’” Rather than being about bladder control, it is about sleep.

Visions

-(Meditation 1): My vision started in the same scene where I see the fox going up the tree. It is a forest. Not exactly a clearing, but there is some space. There is no fox this time. Instead, there is a crow or raven with a snake tail (the tail is blacky green, coming right out of the bird’s butt—under the regular tail). It hobbled around (it is hard to walk with a snake tail) and took flight. It went straight up. The sun shone behind it.

The sun and moon kept rising and falling behind it. This happened rapidly.

It tipped its head up to the sky, and then it shot a bunch of streamers out of its mouth. They were gray like party streamers. When they hit the ground, the streamers would briefly burst into flames.

I saw human stick figures walking into the circle of flames. When they stepped on the flames, they would get dizzy and pass out (actually, die). Then the bird made it so that the circle of flames and dead humans turned into a lake. Fish in the water turned into humans. The humans climbed out of the water looking like cavemen and holding tridents.

-(Meditation 2): In this vision, businessmen are sitting in front of the Kennedy School, smoking cigars. One flicked it and an ashy ember fell to the ground. It zoomed on the ash—each piece of of ash was the scene from the last vision miniaturized. The businessman crushed it with his boot. This was a symbol of how the richest people can crush entire ecosystems.

Summary and Use

A few themes came up: energy vs relaxation, congestion, teeth, sleep, and cycles of evolution vs over concentration of power.

California poppy is often used for sleep. In particular this herb helps quiet the mind and give warm and cozy feelings. It is considered a safe herb for children and helps regulate sleep and is used for enuresis. However, this appears to be more about understanding how to sleep with body awareness, rather than bladder control.

I do not see information on California poppy for treating congestion. That said, this would not be the first time I learned a new use for an herb through a dream, meditation, or vision. So, this warrants further experimentation. Try it next time you have congestion and see if it relieves symptoms.

This herb was traditionally used for toothaches. “Bits of fresh roots were tucked into cavities to relief tooth pain.” Source: Farmacie Isolde https://www.farmacieisolde.com/medicinals/california-poppy  Chewing leaves may also help.

California poppy is supportive for getting grounded when spiritually imbalanced, and with infatuation with glamour, celebrities, lifestyles of the rich and famous. This is a reliable use for addiction support, where the addiction may have more to do with trying to fit in and appear cool. I use it in my herbal smokes, The Social, which are a supportive alternative to people who smoke socially. If individuals are groupies, obsessed with gossip rags, or trying to look glamorous, this herb can help you see everyone as a field of golden flowers, rather than feeling like there are only a few amazing people and the rest are the uncool masses. It helps see each person’s magnificence or inner sun. For this you could use the tea, smoke (I say always smoke herbs with mullein), or flower essence. With our present oligarchy makes this herb feel like it could be key to lifting the veil of delusion for those who do not see the risk of wealth concentration and largely unrestricted power in only a small number of individuals on the planet.

I appreciated meditating with this herb. It gave me such good cozy bed/calm head energy.
